Pardon me for another The CompanY post :P

For the summer of 2007, all roads and all ears lead to “Destination: Bossa”, the 17th and latest album release of the Philippines ’ premiere vocal group, The CompanY,> released under Viva Records. Fresh off their commercial and critical success with 2006’s “The Christmas Album”, this time around, The CompanY takes a musical voyage exploring the varied rhythms, textures and moods of Brazilian music.

Described as the ultimate and essential soundtrack for the summer of 2007, The CompanY’s “Destination: Bossa” purports to be the perfect “gimik” music for that long awaited tropical vacation. Whether you’re in a chill out mood for those calm siestas on warm lazy afternoons, or you prefer the thrill of wild tropical party nights – “Destination: Bossa” takes you where you want to go depending on your mood swings. Think Sergio Mendes meets The Manhattan Transfer, sprinkle with some Swing Out Sister, then add a pinch of Hed Kandi. Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth; then press PLAY and welcome the summer!

This latest musical journey finds The CompanY with an album full of pop classic gems reflecting the impeccable musical taste of Filipinos with a twist of Brasil! Featured songs are as follows: the Brazilian classic “Goodbye Sadness (Tristeza)” gets remixed with hip hop beats; James Taylor’s “Your Smiling Face” latest incarnation morphs into brazilian jazz, “Tulad Mo” (a Tagalog adaptation of “Like A Lover” written by The CompanY’s Cecile Bautista), the French disco classic by Voyage entitled “Souvenirs” is given a sunshiney a cappella lift, The Police’s “Every Little Thing (He) Does Is Magic” now has a jet set cool feel perfect for driving down the Pacific Coast Highway, Seals and Crofts 70’s hit “Summer Breeze” turns into a samba, the obscure Donna Summer hit “Whispering Waves” is the perfect remedy for frayed city nerves, Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” stumbles into a new dance subgenre – “acoustic house music”, Parokya Ni Edgar’s “Harana” goes full on bossa nova, OPM classic “Bato Sa Buhangin” by Ernani Cuengco and Snaffu Rigor turns contemplative with this a cappella version, The Beatles’ “Here Comes The Sun” finds its samba reggae cousin and is performed in Portuguese. Two more alternate remixes are also featured as bonus cuts on the album.

Destination: Bossa is produced by The CompanY’s artistic director, Moy Ortiz for his sub label Pop Art Music/ Viva Records. Moy has enlisted a stellar line up of featured guest artists for this album namely (in alphabetical order): Aquarella – the husband and wife bossa nova duet of Miguel and Evelyn Juteau (Whispering Waves), Electronica Manila’s DJ Brian Cua (La Isla Bonita), Electronica Manila’s Flipperbaby aka Ado Ortiz (Goodbye Sadness Tristeza), the bossa nova outfit called Guarana (Here Comes The Sun), percussion virtuoso Bo Razon (Your Smiling Face, Summer Breeze), Radio host (Understanding Bossa Nova) and lead singer of Guarana – Miss Eileen Sison (penned the new Portuguese lyrics for “Here Comes The Sun” and also acted as The CompanY’s language coach), and finally, multi-awarded composer, producer and guitarist – Mike Villegas (La Isla Bonita) complete this impressive line up of genuine musical artists on the album. The album’s layout is designed by the progressive design house– Team Manila.

The CompanY performs their brand new album “Destination: Bossa” on March 31 at Eastwood (8 p.m.), April 9 at SM Megamall, April 13 at Mall of Asia, April 14 at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall, April 21 at Discovery Shores, Boracay’s brand new luxury hotel and May 1 at The Block. For additional and updated schedules, please visit www.thecompanysingers.com

Destination: Bossa is supported by Viva Records, 105.1 Crossover, MEMO, Prizmic and Brill, Arnel Papa Jewelry, Prizmic and Brill Traveling Trunks and Luggage, Danilo Franco, Janilyn, The Shangri-La Plaza Mall, Discovery Shores, Boy Abunda’s Backroom, Inc. and MYX.

School tapped to develop mobile software applications aimed for global distribution

By EDISON D. ONG

With a little help from a friend, the Green Archer is out to put a feather on its cap.

Make that four feathers? Eight feathers?

These feathers represent the possible globally commerciable software solutions applicable to handheld communication devices.

Industry friend and partner Microsoft Philippines is likewise helping De La Salle University, home of the Green Archers, get closer to realizing its status as a full research and development institution by 2013.

"To go into research (work) is very expensive," said Julius Maridable, DLSU vice president for academic affairs as he recalled that in the past their partnership with industry is confined to on-the-job trainings.

"Now, this is beyond the OJT. Now it is going into research and development, " he added.

Last September 19, in a memorandum of understanding inking ceremony held in DLSU-Manila campus, Microsoft Philippines designated the Advanced Research Institute for Informatics, Computing and Networking (AdRIC) of DLSU-Manila College of Computer Studies (CCS) as the Philippine's first Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC).

Henceforth, the DLSUMIC is a Microsoft-designate d facility for collaboration on innovative research, technology or software solutions, involving a combination of government, academic, and industry partners.

The general aim of the Center is to tap DLSU-CCS students and faculty members to engage in research and development of innovative solutions using Microsoft technologies for the mobile platform.

The focus is on the continuing and sustained collaborative research between industry and academe, and the development of relevant business and industry software solutions.

The creation of the IT R&D Center in De La Salle University campus is a move by both organizations to help spur the development of the Philippine software economy by tapping into the Filipino's innate talent in the field of information technology.

"We envision the Innovation Lab to develop and produce the first in a series of proudly world-class mobile platform-oriented applications and systems, and which mobile software solutions in the years to come shall earn their mark in the global software market," said Microsoft Philippines Managing Director Antonio Javier.

He added, "We feel what is needed right now is for the private sector to work with the academe and give these potential software developers a nudge in the right direction."

Caslon Chua, DLSU-CCS Dean, described the designation of DLSU-CCS as an MIC," is, indeed, a prestigious title, being the first-ever Microsoft grant to an academic institution in the country. We are grateful and we look forward to developing exciting ideas both for the industry and the academe."

Professor Danny Cheng, one of the faculty members which is participating in the project, said the initial focus of the DLSU-MIC will be on the following areas: the planning, research and development of programming tools or content publishing tools to empower local developers and the local industry; mobile security, due to the increasing demand in this area; and mobile productivity, focusing on the office environment, in terms of how to empower employees and employers.

DLSU was chosen for the program because of its expertise in research and development in the areas of information and computing technology, as demonstrated by the novel and high-quality thesis projects produced by its faculty and students. On top of its competent faculty and students, the research unit (AdRIC)adheres to the goals of Microsoft in supporting the local software economy.

Chua said the Microsoft grant it the procurement of powerful servers and mobile devices for use in the Innovation Laboratory. For this school year, four teams (with four members each) will use the facility for their thesis project. It is expected to run for one and one quarter year. Although, they expect to have projects accomplished in under three months.

He said they expect to see about eight successfully developed applications, four each for mobile devices and desktop computers.

Asked why Microsoft is supporting only one innovation center, Chris Atkinson, Microsoft Southeast Asia President, stated, "It is important we start in a focused way before we expand the program."

He added, "The objective is to provide an environment where the students can show their best work."

After almost two weeks of suffering from Asthma, which spoiled my whole Team Building experience last Sept 15 'coz I had to be rushed to the E.R., and being brought back to the hospital MOnday after that, and got admitted for almost a week because my condition worsened to Bronchial Asthma, I can finally sleep on my bed tonight! yey!

I honestly enjoyed my stay in the hospital - for the first time, I was really really able to rest well since all I did was sleep and eat and take steriods and other meds..hehe.. I can now breathe normally once again! And, I don't have to control my laughing! (yes, I had to do that for a couple of days because I really had difficulty catching my breath!)

Now, how do I begin to lose weight? And get rid of this bloating cheeks?!?

P.S. Thanks to Safeway for the big basket of fruits that you sent to me! That was really sweet and thoughtful! It inspired me to go back to work na ulit! :p

And of course, to all those who included me in their prayers for my fast recovery and for the thoughtful messages that you sent through text, and to those who gave me a call during my stay in the hospital, maraming salamat!

this is cool! super simple test yet the result is accurate =)

Down to earth, Well-Balanced,Harmonious

You value a natural style and love that which is uncomplicated. People admire you because you have both feet planted firmly on the ground and they can depend on you. You give those who are close to you security and space. You are perceived as being warm and human. You reject everything that is garish and trite. You tend to be skeptical toward the whims of fashion trends. For you, clothing has to be practical and unobtrusively elegant.
